Fasting is mentioned extensively in the Old Testament. The first commandment in the Garden of Eden pertains to fasting, and both Moses and Joshua practiced fasting, as did kings and prophets. The foundations of Christian fasting are rooted in the Old Testament, yet the complete significance of fasting is unveiled in the New Testament and the Church. By considering the words of the Holy Apostle Paul, who regards the Old Testament as a "guardian (tutor) for Christ" (Gal 3:24), we can comprehend the numerous Old Testament passages that discuss fasting (refraining from food or consistent avoidance of specific foods) as a preparation of Israel for the Incarnation, that is, encountering the incarnate God. This paper will present the most significant Old Testament passages concerning fasting, briefly analyze their reception in the New Testament, and highlight their understanding within the framework of patristic, predominantly ascetic literature. Furthermo...re, the paper will devote special attention to the role of Old Testament readings during the liturgical observances of the Great Lent. The objective of the paper is to establish a clearer connection between the Old Testament texts and the practice of fasting in the Orthodox Church. The primary approaches employed to address these topics are within the framework of the historical-critical method andreception history.
